KCSC promotes the physical and mental wellbeing of Asian immigrants through two community health clinics, one in Fairfax County, VA and the other in Montgomery County, MD.  KCSC also provides health education through seminars, lectures and workshops, and advocates to improve the community health care systems.

KAMMSA CLINIC

KCSC, in collaboration with Mobile Medical Care and the Primary Care Coalition of Montgomery County, operates the KAMMSA community clinic for uninsured Montgomery county residents. Specializing in serving Korean Americans and immigrants, the clinic has been in operation since 2003. KAMMSA clinic is open every Friday from 1pm to 4pm at the Shady Grove Adventist Medical Center. Patients receive care from a volunteer medical team (physicians, nurse practitioners, and interpreters), and referrals are made, as needed, to the local medical partners such as Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Washington Adventist Hospital, and Suburban Hospital (additional fees may apply for referral appointments). By appointment only. The clinic cannot accommodate walk-ins. Copay is $40 per visit.

Eligibility criteria
1. Must be Montgomery County residents
2. Must be 18 and older
3. Must be uninsured. If you have Medicaid, MCO (Managed Care Organization) you must choose an insurance provider such as Amerigroup, Priority Partners, or Riverside.
4. Income level should be at or below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level (in 2015, annual income must be less than $59, 625 for a family of 4).

HOPE CLINIC PSYCHIATRIC SERVICE

sub2-2-01KCSC, in collaboration with Mission Life Center, provides free psychiatric services through the Hope community clinic. The clinic serves low-income, uninsured Koreans who reside in Northern Virginia. In order to use the clinic, individuals or families must be VA residents, below 200% of the federal poverty level (currently, $47,700 for a family of four) and have no health insurance. Please note that eligibility does not depend on immigration status. The Hope Clinic provides bilingual/bicultural psychiatric services on Tuesdays from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at KCSC’s office in Annandale, VA.  Services are provides by appointment only. Patients can meet with a psychiatrist and receive prescriptions for free. For more information and appointments for psychiatric services.

ANNUAL HEALTH FAIRS

sub2-2-02KCSC holds annual community health fairs in the fall in Maryland and Virginia for uninsured or low-income families. The following services are available at no or low cost:

  • Blood Pressure and Blood Glucose check
  • Flu Shot
  • Cholesterol, PSA test
  • Thyroid test
  • Cardiovascular
  • Body fat analysis (BMI)
  • Vision and hearing test
  • Osteoporosis screening
  • Scoliosis
  • Clinical breast exam
  • Prostate cancer test
  • Resources related to heath provided
  • Heart function test
  • Liver function test
  • Senior depression
  • Cognition, speech, and voice screenings
  • Complementary consultation with various specialists, in internal medicine, oncology, orthopedics, oriental medicine, chiropractic, dental, ophthalmology, physical therapy, colorectal surgery, urology, podiatry, and psychiatry.

BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN FOR ASIAN AMERICANS

sub2-03Funded by Susan G. Komen and supported by George Washington University’s Cancer Center, KCSC has provided free mammogram, clinical breast exams, cancer awareness education, prevention, and treatment services for Korean American women since 2009. Mammograms are available for uninsured and low-income women, aged 40 and older, who reside in Maryland and Virginia. Women who have previously been treated for breast cancer or have breast implants are not eligible. Also, women who have had a mammogram in the past 12 months are not eligible to participate in the free mammogram events. However, for those who do not qualify for the free mammogram events, KCSC provides a referral service to Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC), where women can receive a mammogram and pap test for free or at low cost. Also, KCSC provides free clinical breast exams with the help of oncologists at KCSC’s annual health fairs held every fall.

HEPATITIS B PREVENTION PROJECT

sub2-04With the support of the Asian American Health Initiative of Montgomery County, KCSC holds several Hepatitis B education, screening, and vaccination events annually. 2016 Hepatitis B Prevention events schedule and location will be announced through Korean newspapers.

PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION FOR VARIOUS HEALTH RELATED ISSUES

KCSC provides various health related seminars conducted by health care professionals. Classes offered in Fairfax County, VA and Montgomery County, MD. Topics include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Anger Management
  • Breast Cancer
  • Hepatitis B
  • Depression

SENIOR MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Mental health outreach, depression screenings, and information about available resources is provided at local Korean churches. Health education & physical exercise classes also available

ALCOHOL SAFETY ACTION PROGRAM

Through Fairfax County’s Alcohol Safety Action Program, KCSC is a designated alcohol and drug education/counseling program provider. KCSC works with clients who have been referred by their attorneys or the local courts. KCSC provides individual or group substance abuse education and counseling programs (both basic and intensive) either in English or Korean.
