“I am a 59-year-old mother with a son in high school. Last summer, I had a major car accident that totaled my car and, as a result, I could not work. It happened only a couple of months after my shoulder and leg surgeries and, at the time, I had not even finished my rehabilitation. My health only worsened after that. Despite the difficuties of the COVID-19 pandemic and being a single parent, I had been able to make ends meet using my credit cards, unemployment benefits, and a tax return refund; however, after the accident, we were facing grave financial difficulties. It was during this time that an acquaintance introduced me to KCSC and I visited the office with just a glimmer of hope. Thankfully, I was able to receive 2 months of rent support, along with support for various utility bills and living expenses. I also received help with accessing Medicaid, food stamps, and energy assistance. I was able to benefit from 2 months of physical therapy, which got my health in good enugh shape to start working again. I am truly at a loss for words and can’t even begin to express my gratitude. KCSC is a great place of hope, encouragement, and support for those experiencing sudden difficulties like myself. I will strive to live a life where I can give back even a fraction of this precious help that I received to those in need. Thank you, I am truly grateful.”

“I am a 49 year old stay-at-home mom. During the pandemic my primary care physician informed me of my high blood pressure and pre-diabetic condition and advised that I change my exercise and diet. In the midst of feeling alone and at a loss for my next steps, I found out about KCSC's 12-week intensive chronic disease management program (MCHRC program) and decided to participate. The first six weeks focused on education through workshops, and the next six weeks were spent putting what I learned into practice. I set specific exercise goals with the project coordinator, and by following through with these goals such as walking 5 miles, doing 90 push-ups, and climbing 10 flights of stairs daily, I gradually developed good exercise habits. I also maintained a healthy diet by consuming high-quality protein, reducing my salt and carbohydrate intake, and drinking 2 liters of water every day. After completing the 12-week program, I did a blood test again and the results were astonishing! I had lost 5 pounds, was out of the pre-diabetic stage, and my cholesterol levels had returned to normal. I hope that KCSC's health program, which has personally benefited me greatly, will be promoted widely so that more people can benefit from this program.”
MCHRC Program participant, Eunjoo Lee

Our History

Korean Community Service Center of Greater Washington was founded in 1974 by a pastor and his congregation who made a commitment to provide basic transportation and interpretation/translation assistance to newly arrived visitors and immigrants from Korea. They also helped these newcomers rent apartments, set up phone and utilities services, and enroll their kids in school. Over the past five decades, KCSC has grown and evolved into the largest bilingual and bicultural Korean social service agency in the DC metropolitan area. KCSC has expanded and outgrown our original name, now providing services to other Asian immigrant communities living in the metro DC area. KCSC has served more than 175,000 Asian American immigrant families since it was founded and currently provides services to about 1,200 Asian Americans a month at five different office locations. KCSC’s HQ is located in Annandale, VA and we have branch offices in Centreville, VA and in Silver Spring, Gaithersburg, and Ellicott City, MD.
